Honestly, this smells like data rigging to me. Directionally, I'm sure the story told is correct; but they probably chose the threshold for when to color a dot or not exactly to the level that midrange shots disappear entirely on the lower graph, to make the difference look more striking than it probably is.
According to the author, these are the most common locations, so I conclude that there must be a threshold, but he doesn't say how much it is. Are you saying that the threshold is different in the two images?

My guess would be that the thresholds are the same for both charts, but that the threshold was chosen specifically so that all the midrange shots would disappear from the bottom chart.

That's what I thought. This way you can clearly see that the common locations have really changed.
