Visa and Mastercard are not permissionless, you need to provide an identity document to get your card. How can that be called “Bitcoin layer 2”?

Consider the economic inefficiency: we’re effectively rebuilding payment processing capabilities that already exist, function at scale, and connect to virtually every merchant and consumer on the planet.
False. You should travel more.
Blockfi and Nexus are not the ideal companies to be working towards.
I will say that a lesser vision for Bitcoin's future would be to act as some kind of backend SoV. A highly colateralized fiat bank could offer high interest rates to their customers by simply buying bitcoin with their deposits. Over time bitcoin appreciates more than the interest paid out as long as they can stay solvent during bear cycles. This would be a bit of a let down for something with so much more potential though.

You are going to get slammed by people, but I've been having similar thoughts (no, I'm not a fiat lover).

fully expecting it. It is an idea we have to think about.

We’re building this at Nummus — a platform where Bitcoin collateralizes traditional credit accessible through standard payment cards. Rather than replacing payment networks, we leverage existing infrastructure while users maintain Bitcoin exposure, eliminating merchant implementation barriers. Learn more.
Man if you wanted to shill your product just do that. Why write the long article just to shill your proposed soultion?

Outside of crypto conferences and Bitcoin-centric communities, Lightning adoption remains negligible.
THIS IS Blasphemy!!!! We zap all day on SN and nostr plus you have no clue what people are doing with unannounced channels

What a long article. Anyway, Visa can start processing bitcoin payments by just adding it to the hundrets of currencies they process. And that is not what i think bitcoiners mean by layer 2
