So the way I see is the following, and if anyone is risking WW3, it's going to be Trump/Vance.
Europe is at risk and not sure the US is oblivious to it or they just don't care.
Best scenario:
Turkey just entered "peace talks" with PKK because they know that when the US pulls out, Erdogan cannot fight too many wars. Turkey will side with Europe. That's the good news.
US will soon pull out of NATO, which means that all the baltic states are getting exposed (the baltic defense line will not be enough). Turkey as a NATO country will henceforth defend and join Europe but only for in return being admitted into the EU.
It's unclear if, in the absence of US from NATO, Putin will go directly for the baltic states or not.
Anyway, henceforth Ukraine (unclear in what shape) will be entering the EU as well as Moldova. The EU is not a military organization so I guess there will be a successor to NATO which maybe called ETO. Or, since likely, all remaining NATO members will be EU members from that time on, the EU will become a military defense arm as well. What happens further to the east is unclear.
Worst scenario: I dunno. But the US will not be safe if that happens despite the pond.

Thanks for the reasonable take. I consider this a decent response to #904243
I'm not sure if the US is at any risk of pulling out of NATO, though I can understand why Europe is worried about it.
I guess a lot of the disagreement boils down to how aggressive you think Russia will continue to be after a Ukraine peace treaty.
But what I want to understand is, what is the alternative? Is the US and Europe ready to commit actual troops to Ukraine? Because it doesn't seem like continuing to send weapons is going to accomplish anything.

This is the wildest thing I've ever seen in politics. Probably crazier than Joe Biden's mental collapse on stage in the debate.
Why did they decide to do all that with the cameras running?

So the story gets worse.....(I'm sure this is a fair amount spin to this, but lots of it rings true).
  • Evidently Sec of State Rubio is pissed, he had told Trump that "the deal was done" and then Z shows up and start free-styling and changing terms. Makes Rubio look bad since he vouched for Z that the deal was ready to go.
  • They had 2 binders prepared. So they were all expecting to greet each other, chat for a bit, then proceed to sit in front of cameras and sign the deal...then it went off the rails...
  • The clip of arguments thats being circulated is the last 10 mins of a 40 min conversation. Everything leading up to the blow out was calm and productive. Then evidently Z got heated with JD Vance and it all went to shit.
Probably no better pic explains the meltdown than the poor Ukrainian Ambassador

Tomorrow I will have a post about this.... Naturally this Admin (who I do support) has made a lot of stuff difficult including regular Congressional Staffers like myself getting screamed and cussed at in the streets for something we did not touch or do. I have lost several friends in the last month along.
Friday was my 30th and I was hoping to have some peace and celebrate it when the exact happened occurred. Since the shit storm I have slept and tried to ignore this until tomorrow but I will be sure to follow up about everything I know and well my opinions about it all.....
Happy birthday to me -_-

I'm not educated enough on the talks to actually understand the exact points being argued for/against?
I assume Zelensky wanted US continued involvement? Or was the disagreement over paying back US via mineral deal? or both?
reply
I'm not entirely sure the nature of the disagreement either, or what the main sticking point is.
I think Russia wants a guarantee that Ukraine doesn't join NATO, and Trump is willing to concede that. Not sure if Zelenskyy and Western Europe are on board with that. Trump also wants Ukraine to concede "mineral rights" but i'm not super sure what that means. Probably giving US companies the right to engage in natural resource development & extraction in Ukraine.
reply
there is also the question was aid to Ukraine a gift or a loan
because there is no way Ukraine can pay it back

From reading some more online, this is what I gather has gone down.
  • US wanted Ukraine to give up portions of land already controlled by Russia to Russia
  • US wanted Ukraine to sign minerals deal with US to pay back loan
Zelensky agrees to those 2 points, but he makes it contingent that US provide "security guarantee"
Trump refuses this as it keeps US perpetually on the hook if and when fighting reignites.
Thats what led to the blowup in the meeting.
reply
Trump should make a deal with Putin: Donbas is neutral Crimea stays in Russia US extracts minerals from Ukraine new elections in Ukraine to get rid of Zelensky
update: new leader of Germany publicly supports Zelensky, which is symbolic only
Thanks, that's useful to know

I can only imagine Trump scolding the Ukrainian president as if he were a little kid who got into a fight at school 🏫
"I'm telling you to make peace, I don't care if you've already gotten your ass kicked"
and the actor looking annoyed because he's not being defended

I havent seen the whole video but it seems most of what we were shown on social media is the final heated 10 minutes... allegedly the first 40 minutes were much calmer and diplomatic.

Exactly. Trump should not support these wars. America has been on the wrong side for too long. Many jews in israel are against this war an against netanyahu (who probably is involved in this terrorist attack) Every school, university and hospital bombed, not one familiy without deads. The whole world is watching what these zionists are doing and history will repeat itself once again. Many jews know that and try to stop it, but the zionist regime in israel is also fighting them. I have never seen israel police beating rabbis like arabs before.

It's funny how everyone thinks that Russia plays by any rules. Foolish... The only way to continue to exist is to confront Putin but deals are more important it seems.
