Fun fact: there was a brief lapse in the death tax for a couple of days and deaths were shown to have increased during those days.

The "ENIAC Girls" - First female devs

Six young women were recruited in 1944 to program the forerunner of modern computers, ENIAC: Betty Snyder Holberton, Jean Jennings Barik, Kay McNulty Mauchly Antonelli, Marlyn Wescoff Meltzer, Ruth Lichterman Teitelbaum and Frances Bilas Spence. The “ENIAC girls” became the first female programmers in history. Their contributions were largely overlooked, forgotten or ignored until 2013 when a report by Kathy Kleiman, The Computers1, brings to light the contribution these female pioneers have made to computing.

Vikings were known for their excellent hygiene.
Between rowing boats and decapitating enemies, Viking men must have stunk to high Valhalla, right? Quite the opposite. Excavations of Viking sites have turned up tweezers, razors, combs and ear cleaners made from animal bones and antlers. Vikings also bathed at least once a week—much more frequently than other Europeans of their day—and enjoyed dips in natural hot springs.

In Japan, there's a "crying sumo" contest. The goal is for sumo wrestlers to make babies cry. It's believed that the sound of a baby's cry brings good health and wards off evil spirits.

John Law fiat and France
John Law was a Scotsman who introduced the first paper money to France in 1716.
He had befriended the Duke of Orleans, who was the regent for the child king Louis XV, and convinced him that paper money was the way to get the French government out of debt.
Initially, this new paper money was limited in supply and was convertible to gold and silver.
Two years later the supply limitation was removed.
The Bank that had been set up to manage the currency printed more and more notes.
Around the same time, Law had established the Mississippi Company and had acquired a monopoly on France’s foreign trade.
In what became the famous Mississippi bubble, huge demand for the shares in the Mississippi Company drove the share price from 500 livres to 18,000 livres.
During the speculative mania the government continued to print more and more paper money.
Eventually the smart money started taking profits, which triggered a collapse in the stock price of the Mississippi Company.
Recognising the danger of fiat currency, many converted their paper profits into gold and silver.
This was a wise move as inflation had reached 23%.
But it would soon destroy the monetary system.
Law initially responded by suspending convertibility into gold and silver and devaluing the paper currency by 50%. But this could not save the system.
The collapse of both the stock price of the Mississippi Company and the paper currency created chaos in France.
Law fled the country and the government returned to a monetary system based on gold and silver.

Fun fact: At dawn on Friday, October 13, 1307, scores of French Templars were simultaneously arrested by agents of King Philip, later to be tortured in locations such as the tower at Chinon, into admitting heresy and other sacrilegious offenses in the Order. Then they were put to death. Thus the infamous Friday the 13th as unlucky or bad day. Thx for reading and have a blessed day.
