DC is a Federal District meaning it doesn’t have the same rights as even a territory. Until 1975 Congress solely enacted laws in DC but starting then a city government was allowed to form.
Well this government for over a decade now has been plagued by corruption and just general incompetence. Over the last two years as both regular people and even Members of Congress have been attacked in the streets DC has been forced to combat crime. While they had some initial success the last few months they have regressed to a couple of years ago.
Now Trump is calling for the city government to be dissolved and honestly it should be. Most of us in DC vote in elections in the state where we are from. DC’s city council has tried to lower the minimum sentences on things like rape over the last few years. The madness must end.
How will the city be managed with no municipal level government?
reply
So honestly it was managed by Congress for longer than it was as a city. People forget that DC was selected and designed for government building not people to live here. Given how crap at least 75% are direct government workers and the other 25 are contractors or lobbyists Congress has a much better handle on the city

I had hoped, from the headline, that he was calling to dissolve the federal government. This is good, too.
I never really understood why DC would have an independent government, since it exists for the purpose of housing the Federal Government of the United States.

It would be different if most of us in DC didn’t vote in our home states but we do and to me that’s why DC loses credibility. The city has been awful at policing itself and it’s been so wild Members of staff have been stabbed in the head in broad daylight

One day, I really want to do a deep dive on how so many lawyers came to believe that being soft on crime was an appropriate way to fight crime.

Honestly given how quick the city gov sold itself out…. I mean I don’t get why Teddy Rosevelts grandson was so weak like he is on the city council

The reality is that there are many old neighborhoods in DC. Many of my friend's families have lived there for two or three generations. I'm not talking about government workers, transplants or otherwise. Many of these communities are poor, black, and have been shit on by federal government programs since the 60s. I'm reluctant to have that same government control every aspect of their lives.
There is a push by long term residents for home rule:
Look, it's a disaster. Change is needed. I'm just reluctant to see the federal government controlling these local neighborhoods. What I can see happening is that the poor, black populations will be moved from their homes a la Gaza. D. C. hasn't always been the socialist sewer it has become. There are many neighborhoods who would benefit from more decentralization, not less.
One more thing. What people think of as DC is really Northwest DC. That's where all the government commies live and work. Some Georgetown people might be pissed off, but Trump's idea might work there.
