For context purposes, I’m Gen X.
So, my Gen Alpha students run 10 rounds around the field every Friday. They have to pass a physical fitness test within this year, and running 2.4km is one component.
I wasn’t even intending to do it with them, but last Friday, I had to calm down a visibly agitated boy who was pissed off with one of his classmates. By the time I finished, I found half the class at the starting point, raring to go.
Being spontaneous, I decided to join them. Yes, middle-aged man who was wearing a shirt and long pants. Poised to run under the sweltering hot sun.
Honestly, I was expecting to get trashed left right and centre by my 13- or 14- year olds. They have youth on their side. Some of them are from the school soccer club, which requires them to have a certain level of fitness, I suppose.
You know what the miracle is?
I CAME IN FIRST. At 13+ minutes.
I beat all of them. I overtook some of them by several rounds, oh my goodness.
I used to think that I am grossly unfit. Now, I think that Gen Alpha kids can still look up to someone who is old enough to be their father!
Cheap thrill, but I feel more motivated to exercise because I am King of the Jungle!

Is it possible they let you win?

Good point. I doubt so. They weren’t taking it 💯 seriously, but they weren’t playing the fool either. I think it’s more like their mobile games and more sedentary lifestyle have caused them to be less fit than their elders. I’m sure COVID has had a part to play in this

That sounds fun. Did any of them seem to care about losing, though?

Not really. My street cred shot up overnight, though haha
