Looking for a cheaper accounting software to use for just keeping basic records; expenses, income, ocasional invoicing, maybe recording mileage... I've been using Self Employeed Quickbooks for some time now, but the prices just keep going up. Hoping someone could point me in the right direction for an alternative. Thanks.
I like manager.io - Its basically free unless you need advanced hosting / multi-user / etc.

Wow, great recommendation. I'm intrigued by it. Just downloaded and will dive in later. Thanks

Used it for years, its quite intuitive and feature rich.
We are going to upgrade to a paid plan this year because we need multi-user access....however for the last 3+ years we've used it without paying a cent.

Would you be able to assist me in setting it up if I need? I'm also looking at Zoho Books
reply
Sure, we are only using it for Invoices and Payments though.
We do balance our bank balance to it, but don't use the included "Bank Recon" module (not sure why we don't use).
....there are lots of other features like Inventory, Depreciation, Expense Accounts, Employees, etc that we don't use.

Hmm, okay. My intent on using a program like this is to keep track of my income and expenses. Occasionally invoices from jobs and such. May I ask how you organize yourself for taxes then?
Either gnucash or beancount.

Check HomeBank (simpler) or GNUcash (full). FreeSoftware both.

From ChatGPT:
There are several alternatives to QuickBooks, depending on your business size and needs. Here are some of the best options:
Cloud-Based Accounting Software 1. Xero – Great for small businesses, strong automation, and integrations. 2. FreshBooks – Best for freelancers and service-based businesses. 3. Zoho Books – Affordable option with automation and integrations. 4. Wave – Free for basic accounting, good for startups. 5. Sage Business Cloud Accounting – Scalable for small to mid-sized businesses.
Enterprise-Level Alternatives 6. NetSuite by Oracle – Comprehensive ERP with advanced accounting. 7. Microsoft Dynamics 365 – Integrated with Microsoft products, best for larger companies. 8. SAP Business One – Best for enterprises with complex financial needs.
Open-Source & Desktop Alternatives 9. GnuCash – Free, open-source, good for small businesses. 10. Odoo – Open-source ERP with accounting features. 11. AccountEdge – Desktop-based, great for Mac users.
If you’re looking for a specific feature (e.g., inventory management, payroll, or multi-currency support), I can help narrow down the best option. What are you looking for in accounting software?
