I map this to the free software movement... when you start, you need to use what you have, and build from there. Hardware is "hard" than software, so it's going to be a long journey.

For sure, pretty wild we are still doing this dance, but yes there is hope - block. 

from what I remember in a podcast recently, block are building full schematics, paperwork/ supporting documentation for their chips coming out soon. 
Skot9000 on twitter also confirmed they are working with a company straight from the fab - presuming this is Block.
