What we know today in the pop culture of the modern sports business, such as the star cult around people like Cristiano Ronaldo or the sale of fan paraphernalia from sports clubs, already existed in ancient Rome, as this mosaic of a boxer from the floor of a Roman villa in Pompeii shows. So we haven't changed that much since then.
