The Sarasota (Florida) County Public Hospital Board on Tuesday approved Sarasota Memorial Care System's (SMH's) plan to build a new $450 million hospital in North Port, Florida. This will be the city's first hospital.
The master planning team includes Flad Architects, headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, and general contractor/construction manager Barr & Barr, headquartered in New York City.
The plan that the board approved Tuesday represents the first phase of SMH's development and will feature a six-story, 305,000-square-foot hospital designed to withstand the wind, rain and debris generated by hurricanes; a 60,000-square-foot medical office building; and a back-up energy center. The project also includes:
- 100 private rooms;
- Emergency, diagnostic, administrative and support services at the first floor;
- Surgical and procedural areas at the second floor;
- Patient beds on the third, fourth and fifth floors; and
- Mechanical space and the infrastructure necessary for a potential three-floor, 108-bed expansion at the sixth floor.
Site work, SMH said, is scheduled to begin right away at the 32-acre hospital site, with groundbreaking slated for later in the the year. Once under construction, the hospital should take approximately 30 months to complete.

4,675 BTC To construct a hospital. Six stories would be my guess as to why this project is so expensive.
