So to my understanding Devs of Asahi Linux want some features for Rust support in kernel. Linux kernel maintainers are unwilling for the patch. The Ashai team made a social media campaign out of it. Now Linus is saying the social media brigade alone makes him not want anything to do with the Rust patch.
We clearly have left the topic and are now in the realm of politics on this one. What do you guys think?
Linux kernel maintainers are unwilling for the patch
The way I heard it was:
  • a component needs a patch to support Rust programming in the kernel
  • the maintainer of the component won't accept the patch because he can't understand Rust code 1
  • the author of the Rust patch is upset because now there is no way Rust components can be integrated into the kernel.
  • Linus let this go on so long that the Rust developer decided to "raise his voice"
  • Linus is not going to piss off all the old C programmers that maintain Linux.

Footnotes

  1. I also heard the maintainer didn't even look at the patch because if he had looked he would have seen it would not affect any existing C code.

It's a common accusation in the Linux/FOSS world that people block merges and leave nitpicking comments about code they didn't even try to understand and just glanced at. I don't know how real it is. But I certainly know that the Linux world is full of people with this attitude.

I think it's FOSS attitude of "I can do whatever I want if I am the maintainer" (which is true)
reply
True, if they don't like it, they could just fork away.
However, the fork would never have the resources that mainline Linux has. And as long as Linus is alive, it likely wouldn't succeed.

I just can't seem to get over the fact that Linus appears every fucking time as a chad, like a divinity or sum.
And Asahi dev team is too good for hector's management.

Nah, just one kernel maintainer was publicly unwilling. A maintainer who has always wanted the kernel to be C-only and is commonly considered to be a troll. But Linus didn't like the social media drama.

Do you have a link for more context? But from only the context here, Linus seems totally in the right.
Exploiting social media NPCs to get your way is really unprofessional and counterproductive.
reply
It's on the Linux Kernel mailing list. Lots of discussion and quoting on r/Linux

Agreed. But should social relations be able to stand in the way of technological decisions? Linus isn't even talking about the patch here anymore, it's only politics.

Yeah, I also wouldn't talk about the patch with them anymore. I would be willing to talk about the patch with someone else / someone else can submit a patch.

It’s hilarious that people thought social media shaming would convince Linus to do anything (good) for them
