Germany's economy is grappling with the repercussions of years of misguided policy, leading to a significant downturn in its industrial backbone. The automotive sector, a cornerstone of German industry, concluded 2024 with a dismal performance, with manufacturing output dropping by 2.4% in December alone, marking the sharpest decline since July of the previous year. This downturn contributed to an overall annual decrease of 4.5% in industrial production compared to 2023, as per the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office.
The December slump was far worse than anticipated, with analysts expecting only a 0.7% decrease. Furthermore, revisions to November's data showed manufacturing growth was less robust than initially reported, adjusting from a 1.5% increase to 1.3%. This series of setbacks underscores a broader narrative of regulatory overreach and detrimental environmental policies that have stifled key industries, leading to economic stagnation.
