Sports fact: The original dodgers in MLB were the Brooklyn Dogers in 1932. Prior to that, they were a top ranked dodgeball team.

I was wondering how they got the name in Brooklyn

update: The team's name derived from the reputed skill of Brooklyn residents at evading the city's trolley streetcars. The name is a shortened form of one of their former names, the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers

The term "Trolley Dodgers" refers to the nickname given to people in Brooklyn in the late 1800s who had to navigate around street-level trolley cars. These trolleys, which began using electrical power in 1892, were faster and thus perceived as more dangerous, requiring residents to "dodge" them to avoid accidents. The Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team adopted this nickname, which was later shortened to just "Dodgers," reflecting the skill of Brooklyn residents at evading the city's trolley streetcars

reply

Yea, they could throw wicked hard because of all the dodgeballs they threw

reply

I always assumed it was for draft dodgers. Haha

reply

That would actually be pretty funny, but that's when baseball was still America's pastime. It may have not gone over well.

reply

Absolutely they were originally called the Dodgeballers but shortened it to Dodgers when transitioned to baseball.
