Fans like the idea of their teams going all in to win a championship but it is generally not a prudent way to run a franchise.
But there are a number of reasons why I think the 49ers should consider pushing in their chips for 2025. Trade for Myles Garrett, sign Drew Dalman, re-sign Greenlaw and Hufunga, extend Purdy, extend Kittle. Do it all.
Here is why:
  • The 49ers are going to have the easiest schedule in the NFL next season. Thanks to an injury riddled, mess of a season, the 49ers are playing a 4th place schedule. On top of that the NFC West plays the NFC South and AFC South this season. Two terrible divisions. The best non divisional opponent the 49ers play next year is a toss up between the Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If the 49ers are healthy they should absolutely be favourites for the Number 1 seed in the NFC.
  • Detroit is weakened. They lost both their OC and DC. They have a very difficult schedule. Besides playing 6 games in their tough division they are going to have to face tough teams like the Eagles, Commanders, Chiefs, Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Rams. Good luck. Detroit isn't winning more than 11 games.
  • Philly will be coming off a Super Bowl win or loss next year. There is a good chance they are going to lose their OC. They have 8 defensive players that are free agents this year. That vaunted D is not coming back the same. It remains to be seen if Saquon can repeat an all time season two years in a row. Their schedule is not easy they will be playing the NFC North teams and AFC West teams this year. Philly is not winning more than 12 games.
  • Commies are young and have a lot of cap space. They will get better. Daniels was amazing year one but as we saw with Stroud and other guys the sophomore slump is real. The league will adjust and I expect he will be good but the Commies will also have a tough schedule. Commies are not winning more than 12 games.
  • The 49ers have 42M in cap space and can create more with restructures and cuts.
  • The 49ers have 11 draft picks this year in a deep draft, including the 11th overall pick. They can either use some of that capital in a trade for someone like Garrett or they can spend in FA and back fill the roster with young, inexpensive players.
  • The Super Bowl is in SF next year. That means if they lock up the one seed in the NFC they potentially could play the entire postseason at home.
  • Robert Saleh will make the defense great again.
  • They actually have a competent ST coordinator now.
  • After Super Bowl ratings suck this year, the NFL will stop cheating for the Chiefs (maybe).
  • Dammit because I want them to.
Sats for all, GR
I like the name so I'm with you. How much can a team spend? Is there a cap on spending?
reply
Yes there is a salary cap.
reply
So, they can only spend what they've got.
reply
There is a maximum all teams can spend. It’s meant to keep the league fair so all the rich teams don’t just spend double or triple the other teams and get all the good players and win every year.
reply
Thanks, that's why I asked. I don't really understand the game full well but I'll cheer for them next year.

I fully agree and the 49ers probably should trade their 2025 and 2026 first round picks to get Garrett, rather than take the chance on a rookie this year. Two DPOY bookends on the line would be incredible.
If they come into the season fired up and stay healthy, they could easily be a 15-2 team.
The other issue for the Lions is that so many of their defensive players are coming back from serious injuries. Who knows if they'll even be at 100% of what they were (which was a mediocre defense)?
reply
Agreed. They are likely going to pick a DT or DE at 11 anyways but instead you are getting Garrett. Next year's first rounder will likely be late first round anyways. I would do two first and their third round comp pick this year as well.
