Nice. I which bitcoin applications could also use LAN+multicast discovery but aren't. Perhaps if/when clientside validation protocols become popular this would be useful for sending proofs. I can't think of many other instances.

Samba is fine, Linux on the local network is deprived of a desktop and monitor. Android also has access to Samba, everything is ok.
