As far as I understand, stacker news categorizes posts and comments based on their tips? If so, what forbids someone from having two accounts, one of which will just tip the other to gain better recognition?

I believe they use a web of trust type solution where a new account or one with only tips from one account would not value it as a trustworthy source of upvoting.
