@Shugard posted this recently "Are you going to local BTC meetups?" in comments by Stacker @j7hB75. It got my attention.
I have never been. I'm still leery about going since it could put unnecessary risk on you. I find SN a good alternative.
This is very new to me, but now it makes sense. Actually, bitcoiners are at the biggest risk of getting robbed, kidnapped, or killed. I think it's easy to do with them because what do they need? That 12-word passphrase? I want to ask you who joins bitcoin meetups often or sometimes. What measures do you take? I have never joined any meetups, but probably I'll join someday. I want to know how you guys ensure your safety and what red flags to see before accepting an invite. Thanks.

Perhaps it has to do with my life experience, but I really don't understand this fear. Working in my dad's store as a kid, I was used to always carrying cash in my pocket. As a criminal lawyer, most of my clients didn't have a checking account. On my first date with my wife, I had to pick up money for dinner from a client who walked out to my car and handed me a wad of bills. I'm not saying you shouldn't be careful, but it's a hell of a lot easier getting a wad of paper off of me than bitcoin off my phone.

I got it, thanks. I think getting info from you is enough you all are experienced enough for that.

Are you getting out of your house? Or are you afraid that a big rock will fall onto your head?

This is so off base with what OP is talking about. He's talking about the potential target you paint on your back by going to Bitcoin meetups.
FFS why people are so chicken shit nowadays?
Do you attend Bitcoin meetups?

I was organizing BTC meetups for about 3 years back in 2016... Not going to a BTC meetup as a noob because you scared shit of "attackers" is kind of dumb.

That's awesome. Are you still organizing and going to meetups?

How is being vigilant a dumb thing? Haha.

I would love to shoot Darth in person

Please don't give death threats or intent to kill anyone. You're a long time Bitcoiner I'm sure you know it's against the natural law?
reply
it's not a death threat
it's target practice
edit: I would love to refine my aim using Darth as a target

But why do you want to do this to anyone? What has he done to you?
🤔 Don't ya think it's a new growing risk maybe? You can't know when a criminal might set their eyes on you. Anyone can join a meetup?
I did a simple search and found out in the headlines.
Crypto sleuth ZachXBT has noted an uptick in crypto robberies where people in the crypto space are being held and threatened at gunpoint.
Highlights
Crypto robberies are turning violent.
In-person crypto meetings are now a high-risk activity.
Blockchain transparency puts crypto holders at risk.
I think risk is there.🤷

Please don't say that... everybody need to learn how to live.. but don't ask bitcoiners to go back fiat ahahah

Let's say I will be kidnapped by thugs and they start torturing me to give away my BTC wallet. What I will do? NEVER GIVE UP. Yes I have big balls. Why? Because I know that even if they kill me they will get nothing. This is the key point in all this and they know it. And I fucking don't care if they kill me. Maybe I will be happier getting out from this fucked up world anyways.
reply
It helps when cutting off a finger is kind of a moot point

I think it's a generational gap, and what you have seen and what I have seen is a big difference.
Please go back to fiat... Bitcoin is too dangerous for you.
Not dumb enough to do that, but I want to be cautious enough to not lose even a single sat or my life. It’s only a question I'm not scared.

If you want everyone to be orange pilled and Fiat free world, don't you think there are many different kinds of people both weak and strong in the world? So, do you want them (weak) not to have Bitcoin?
reply
Bitcoin is a natural selection. Only the strong will survive. All the rest... HFSP or die.

Of course they are safe. Execpt if you have been eaten by mainstream media
reply
I didn't make any generalized statement; it was just a simple, straightforward question. And yes, it's not fake or made up stories there are incidents out there. I have no idea how meetups work, that's why I asked. Didn't know that nobody even wants to hear what they don't want to hear.

If you had bitcoins and did not watch main stream media, will you ask this question?
One of my friend never watches news, and so he says for him the world is doing fine
reply
I didn't ask this question by watching mainstream media at all. It was made by a stacker. But how is the media to be blamed? I know they do a lot of stupid things, but incidents happen and they report it. You don’t know when probability gets you and you end up in an incident. Being cautious is a wise choice, it's evolutionary. If our ancestors didn’t care for their safety, we as humans wouldn’t be here at all.
