I like to go to local meetings. You can have wonderful conversations and engage with the local community. It's always cool to learn from others and help them with things. Sharing your thoughts or just chatting is one of the most valuable things in our space. And the best part about it: most of the people you interact with are nice! It's already a pre-sorted crowd.

yes, i also started one that snowballed into much more - the history of bitcoin ljubljana

i've since left the country but the meetup goes on. I do understand the opsec implications of it and if I'd do it all again I'd remain a nym

Thanks for that interest read and view!

reply

Yes, locally on SN servers. Haha

These basement kids...

reply

I am not in the basement. I am at my kitchen table right by the patio doors so I can see the outside world but I don't have to feel it. Haha Actually I have to take my dog for a walk and check the mail. I will wear my Bitcoin hat, maybe someone will mention it and then I can say I had a local meetup.

reply

That would be the coolest local meetup there is

reply

I haven't yet, but I may in the future

reply

Same. I'm getting emails about one that I showed some interest in but haven't pulled the trigger. Feel like I'll be glowing fluorescent orange from orange pilling myself by the time I show up to one.

reply

Maybe one will come up that some people I know from here go to... that may motivate me a bit more

I really like meeting fellow stackers in person. You get to know people pretty quickly after a few meetups. We do joke about getting rolled. We leave in a pack.

reply

Ill keep my eyes open for stackers talking about meet ups on SN. Who knows right?

reply

With an appropriate cold storage or multisig setup... it's probably a tired trope to say this but it really should be very difficult for anyone to gain access to your ice cold crispy sats.

reply

That won't stop them from trying unfortunately.

reply

True, but in one scenario they have a chance of coming out on top despite you going down.

Done correctly, you'd still go down but at least they didn't walk with your tasty sats.

reply

You should give it a try!

reply

I might. Ive only been into bitcoin for less than a year so I haven't thought about it too hard yet.

reply

I have never been. I'm still leery about going since it could put unnecessary risk on you. I find SN a good alternative.

reply

Stacker News is the GOAT.
Now if we could only get rid of Cowboy Credits...

reply

What do you mean by unnecessary risk?

reply

Being targeted. Perhaps I'm too paranoid, but if meetups are publicly known, then adversaries can monitor these meetups and pick out victims.

reply

Is it true?

reply

The co-founder of Ledger was kidnapped for ransom recently and had his finger cut off. This is an extreme example, and not necessarily tied to going to a meetup, but he was known to hold Bitcoin and was targeted.

I go frequently. I pack heat

reply

Awesome!

reply

I would like to, but the local meetups I have found seem to have a focus on shitcoins. Yeah, No thanks.

reply

Fuck shitcoiners! The place where I lived before was promoting ETH and XRP as well. I only went once and never again! Don't support that shit!

reply

True that, fuck shitcoiners indeed.

reply

I live at the edge of the world; we don't have em!

reply

So fucking sad...

reply

No, I just on SN.
