I'm curious as to how many SN folks actively trade stocks. And if so, what kind of strategies do you use, and what information sources do you rely on?
Personally, I do trade stocks and I guess you could say I'm more of a "macro" investor in the sense that I don't do a lot of research on individual companies, but I take positions based on where I think certain macro or global trends are headed.
It's as much an entertainment activity for me as it is a financial decision; I'm not sure I wouldn't earn a better return by just dumping it all in an index fund. But I've had my share of both success stories and mistakes.
No I don't trade stocks anymore. I actually sold all my non registered equity holdings during the last bitcoin bear market and converted most of it to Bitcoin.
I do own still own stocks in a retirement account but I don't actively trade. I contribute a bit of money to it monthly and reinvest dividends. I rarely swap out positions. I don't keep a lot of holdings in my retirement portfolio. A good chunk of it is in btcc which is the Canadian bitcoin etf. I also own a couple tech stocks, couple high dividend payers, preferred shares etf, oil and gold etfs, a couple Canadian banks, and a few other things.

Great mute me.
Red flag for me are people who can’t comment for themselves and have to use Darthcoin as a proxy.

It was a sports related joke. Everyone's entitled to their own choices, and I'm not one to judge. I definitely should have included the :) emoji.

Ok sorry about. I misunderstood. I have had people try to respond to my comments before by inciting Darth as if that is going to threaten me into changing my opinion.
I sold all the stocks I owned for bitcoin but I can’t sell my retirement account or I pay a massive tax penalty. I have had it for almost 2 decades so I don’t bother making changes to it. I just add when I have some money. Bank stocks have been in there since I first opened it.

I don't have stocks... only BTC right now.

I have like 2k in stocks

Yes I own stocks. I think even in a post Bitcoinization world great companies will be needed to provide goods and services to the world. Owning shares in these companies means you are giving them capital to meet their business goals. Also I try to find companies I can buy and hold for at least 20 years if not forever in the bloodline.
So I try to buy companies that work towards the world view I wish to have.
Plus I am running two experiments with stock pickers to show buying bitcoin will out perform them. So I own a bunch of companies that don’t align with my ethics.

That's a good philosophy. And I agree that we'll still have things like stocks in a bitcoinized world. Stocks are not inherently fiat

It’s millions of people who just want to work and earn a living wage trying to provide value to the world. It’s people who keep modern society so pleasant. If you are happy with your water, power, internet, food, services then consider buying shares in those companies. If they pay a dividend then you can take that cash flow and buy bitcoin with it.
Everything doesn’t have to be how much money will it make it. Sure you can factor it in but it doesn’t have to be the final decision. Plus as the debt bubble pops I will think bitcoiners with massive wealth can buy these companies and operate them according to Bitcoin principles
reply
Nope. 100% BTC.
I mean, I guess pension accounts have exposure but I don't exactly "trade" those, eh

I used to, based on both fundamentals and TA, which is fun. I don't trade stocks anymore, although I still keep some positions on AMD and a few other companies since 2004-2006. I'm slowly but surely unloading them to get BTC and LTC, although I'll probably keep a few AMD because I think it's a good tech, I think it'll keep doing well, and, of course, for fun.

Yep, for me it's a bit like, "Well the world is shit and I can't really change the course, might as well place a bet on how much shittier it will get."
