Personally, I have a broken brain. I wish people understood that when I space out during a conversation, I'm not trying to be rude. I just get distracted and have a Walter Mitty moment.

I sometimes try so hard to avoid looking like Iām not listening, even though I am, that I get distracted and have to ask them to repeat what they just said.

For me, someone will say something that my brain just runs away with. I get hyper fixated on a small detail and then I'm off to the races.

Sometimes my brain prioritizes saying the thing that is funny over the thing that is proper/expected if enough people present (AKA at least me) can appreciate it

This is one of the funniest things that can be done with strangers, for example. I like this approach because it's so polarizing. If you get the other person to smile or laugh, you get an immediate connection. Otherwise they just consider you a mental case...which in my situation could even be the truth lol

It's especially fun with strangers and you get better and better at it the more you do it.
A well targeted quip or joke at the right/wrong time and then glimpse at their reaction will tell you a lot about said stranger.
It can even act as a filter. Based on the way they react, you may quickly decide if it's worth investing more time and effort with the niceties and interaction.
(im not a sociopath, i promise)

Sounds like my wife. She comes home burned out on days that she has a lot of meeting.

My jokes š¤£!
I could be having a normal conversation with a random person on the street and I try to make a joke but with my normal voice and with serious look...and no one laugh. Only the people who knows or understand my humor.

I hate when my jokes fall flat. It hurts my soul.

My silence... sometimes it causes a lot of confusion because it seems like I'm indifferent to the situation.

I have the habit of always thinking of counter-arguments to what I just said and it comes across paticularly bad on SN.
"What if A", next paragraph "What if not A".
I have been been attacked, personally insulted here. Called me a shitcoiner. People put me on enemy lists on SN because of that.

Yea i could see how that could get confusing. It's not always easy to explain yourself over text.

I feel like people on this platform are more allergic to nuance than on any other platform unfortunately. It's more like Twitter than like Hacker News in this regard

It's true that if a conversation is not engaging, my brain gets distracted. I try my best to act interested, though I just wish they don't ask any follow ups š.

they do not understand that when i call them dumb, stupid, and retarded, i really mean it, and that it comes from my true care for their intelligence and well being, which have been dumbed down, stupefied, and retarded.
