I freaking love this book so much that I’m gonna recommend this to the next parent who asks me to suggest books that will improve his child’s grades.
On pg 4, Judith Stamper writes about how polar bears keep warm in the cold weather. Very useful for heat transfer and adaptations for Primary 4 and 6 students respectively. Pg 28 even contains a clear explanation on blubber and its function.
On pg 18, she introduces tundras, which will come in handy on pg 51, as the reader learns how the Arctic fox changes its fur during summer to blend in with the tundra surroundings.
Pg 35 showcases the structural adaptations so we learn how polar bears swim, though I doubt this will be tested for PSLE. A more likely question is how male polar bears compete for the affection of their female counterparts - and that is addressed on pg 69.
Food chains and food webs are another important concept, and on pgs 36-37, we are treated to a description of how a polar bear caught a seal. Way to cement into impressionable minds that bears are apex predators.
Okay, enough exam talk. Something fun that I learnt: polar bears spread out their legs and lay their bellies flat on thin ice so that they can use their claws to push themselves across the ice. I guess I cannot use idioms like as clumsy as a polar bear in my teaching, 😂
