Saw many flamingos yesterday ( it's wild! and they were doing group dancing because it's mating season ) and learned a few fun facts: do you know why flamingo is pink? Because baby flamingo is brownish. šŸ¦©

some other animal fun fact: why are bird nests always so clean?
reply
The parents always eat the shit of their young. When the feed them, they poop right after and the parents clean it up. Im not making it up.

if you had to make up the answer, what would you think?

Have you ever watched how efficient they feed the baby birds, though? Its pretty amazing.

The shrimp they eat.
reply
yes!! if they don't eat enough shrimps they won't get so pink, nature is fascinating:)
reply
Yes. I think it has some kind of protein that makes them that color. Thats why at the zoo, they arent as pink as they should be.

Unfortunately, the internet says this fun is exclusive to flamingos

ek, maybe you should test the theory? In Taiwan, they have a fishing pool where you could fish for shrimp. Then they would cook them up for you, or use them in hotpot.

Good idea. Do you think one week of eating only shrimp is enough to test the theory?
reply
You would have to eat a lot of shrimp in that week. Reminds me of one of those crawfish boils. I have heard of people eating lots carrots and their skin turning orange.

A group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance".
reply
It's quite funny because I was talking with a friend, and we discussed how many similarities between humans and birds.
  • mating: show off feathers, dancing/singing
  • food: thriving when eating what they are meant to, shrimp for flamingos--> more pink; But got weak when being caged VS Humans get weaker and weaker when being caged in big cities.

the quality of being very confident in your behaviour, and liking to be noticed by other people, for example because of the way you dress or talk

I have no idea why, but English has many absurd names for groups of animals.
