It is great to see all of the research being done to catch us back up in the Gen IV reactor race. The US has long been the leader in sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) operation but when the public opinion on nuclear went south the US stopped developing them commercially. China and Russia have now deployed their first Gen IV reactors and with Argonne National Lab's 30+ years of experience with the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) the US has the ability to easily catch up as long as we deploy the resources to do so.
SFR reactors in particular are dramatically safer than the current ones as well due to the way that they physically are. Sodium cooled do not suffer from the same issues as water cooled ones and produce less waste as well something those against nuclear hold against it. Overall huge huge news!
