I’m confused how they were able to create that portrait. I always thought that the colors changed with the size of the transaction and thus also the size of the image of the transaction.

I believe the color is the fee rate so varying levels of fee rate changes the colors of each little block.

You can experiment with Bitfeed to watch blocks get built in real time
https://bits.monospace.live/
There’s a toggle switch in the settings where you can set color based on fee rate.
I believe that MemPool space has an arrangement with Bitfeed to incorporate their colorful block display into MemPool.
