Good article by 49ers beat reporter David Lombardi regarding Brock Purdy's potential extension.
I am not disputing anything Lombardi is saying or the trends of the current QB market which appears to be up only. I hope the 49ers re-sign him and I care much more about contract structure than APY. Cap hits, guaranteed money and potential outs will be most important. As I mentioned in my last post about this the 49ers are amongst the best in the league at structuring big $ deals.
I don't expect Brock to take a discount to stay in SF but maybe he should.
I have been thinking about other situations where Brock could be as successful and they seem few and far between. Either because they don't have the scheme or roster that works well with Brock, or they already have a QB they are paying big money to, or they have a young QB they hope will become elite or they plan to draft a young QB they hope will become elite, or they play in an open air stadiums in locations predisposed to inclement weather.
When you go through the list of teams where Purdy might be a fit, it doesn't seem there would be a huge list of suitors, especially if you consider he would be looking for 60M apy.
Let's take a look by division and see if there are any really good fits for Brock.
AFC East: Maybe Miami if they were to move on from Tua or if he was to retire due to too many concussions. Good scheme fit, good complementary pieces, good offensive minded coach. Good weather. But bad weather in the rest of the division. Who knows what the Jets are doing. Maybe could be a fit if they don't draft a QB or name Rodgers QB and CEO until he is 50. Bad weather option and division though.
AFC North: Steelers and Browns both need better long term options at QB. Steelers could be a good scheme fit and have a few nice offensive weapons. Tomlin seems to get the best out of his players. Browns are a complete mess, who knows if they think they need a QB. Both bad weather locations and the entire division is susceptible to inclement weather.
AFC West: Raiders need a QB but with a new regime coming in they likely want to draft and develop their own. Seems like it could be a fit if they wanted to go the FA route but who knows what the new coach will want to do scheme or personnel wise. Weather wouldn't be an issue but could be when they go on the road to KC or Denver late in the season.
AFC South: Colts and Titans seem like they could be fits. Who knows what happens with Richardson in Indy and Titans definitely need a long term option at QB. Titans are likely to draft a QB this year though so that might eliminate that idea. Weather shouldn't be an issue at all in AFC South.
NFC East: Giants definitely need a long term option at QB. One would imagine they will try to draft one this year but it's the Giants so who knows. I don't think it is a fit weather wise though. That's a lot of late season home games and divisional games that could be played in poor weather.
NFC North: Unless the Vikings want to move on from McCarthy, which would seem odd when he hasn't thrown a pass in the league yet, I don't see much of a fit in this division. If they did want to move on from McCarthy it could be a nice fit with a good offensive minded coach, great weapons, domed stadium. Travelling to Chicago and Green Bay late in the season could present weather issues but Detroit is also a dome and it's unlikely you can completely eliminate the weather factor.
NFC South: Saints seem like a good fit. They need a long term QB option post Carr who only has 2 years left on his deal. Brock isn't actually a FA until after next season and 49ers could franchise tag him after that. Depending what they do with coaching and the roster going forward this might be the best non NFC West fit. Weather isn't an issue in that division as it is filled with domed stadiums or good weather locales.
NFC West: Seattle would be a terrible option for Brock with the amount of rain they get but they do need a better, longer term option than Geno. Cardinals are tied to Kyler Murray whether they want to be or not. That leaves what I think are the two best fits in the NFL for Brock. Staying with the 49ers (obviously) or going to the Rams and replacing Stafford when (if) he retires in a couple years. Rams have elite weapons, a great offensive minded coach, and the West doesn't really pose many weather issues other than Seattle. Other than staying in SF, the Rams would be Brock's best option and fit.
As you can see, there are really only a few ideal fits for Brock. Sure some team can ignore he can't grip a ball in the rain and snow and hope for the best but if you are going to pay a guy 60M a year you probably want to know he isn't going to pull a Sam Darnold when the season is on the line in December or in the playoffs. So, with such a small market for Brock, should he really be trying to get the biggest APY contract in history or should he give the 49ers a bit of a discount, still get paid handsomely and stay in a situation where he knows he can thrive?
What say you stackers? Am I missing something? Is the Brock market more robust than I am thinking?
Sats for all, GR
The Rams reject Brock Purdy
reply
Yeah I get it. Wouldn't want to class up your franchise or fake ass city with high quality people.
reply
U get it!
reply
I think you nailed it. He's exactly the QB the Raiders needed this year (AOC with wheels), but who knows what the next regime will be looking for.
The Raiders definitely have the money to throw at him, plus an upgrade at TE for him to throw to.
reply
Younger TE to play longer with. Let's go with that.
reply
I'm just suggesting he might want to throw to a 1st Team All-Pro TE.
reply
I think he would prefer to throw to a 2 time and 1 time robbed All Pro TE.
reply
Yes, thanks for saving me from stating this.
reply
Normally I would let him have a win because lord knows his Raiders don't give him many but not at the expense of Kittle. That is a bridge too far.
reply
Kittle is incredible and IMO doesn't get enough credit outside of 49er fans of course who love him. Nothing against Kelce who is incredible but Kittle deserves more spotlight than he gets.
reply
I love Kittle. He's been one of my favorite players in the NFL for a long time.
The second best TE in the league definitely deserves more love.
Thankfully, it's not up to you whether or not I get this win.
reply
That is quite a nice poster. You should buy that and hang it up in your office.
You guys are so entertaining lol
reply
We are highly productive individuals. Haha
reply
I mean, he'll have the opportunity to throw to a two time All Pro in Vegas, since he's not going on into free agency this year.
reply
Maybe. Everyone thought LaPorta was the next big thing after last season too.
reply
Oh, I missed the part where he broke all the records, while playing in a terrible scheme with backup QB's and no running game.
reply
I didn't say LaPorta was better but he was in All Pro discussions last year and was widely anointed the next one and this year he definitely took a step back. Not saying the same will happen to Bowers but it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Not even close. I know the QB Tax is real. But he's a 50milly at best. 60mil is an exorbitant amount of money.
reply
I hear ya but what did you think about my break down of other teams that he would be good fits with. I don't really care about the number I just don't see a huge market for a good quarterback that can be great in the right situation but has proven limitations. How many teams are going to bid for that? He should stick in SF for the next decade and win 3 Super Bowls.
reply
I agreed with Saints being the right fit, I think they're a decent QB away from returning to relevance.
But I also feel that the best place for him as a system QB is with the system he's in, I don't know if the 9ers window is closing but it's definitely a narrower window than it was. I can't tell if the 9ers got wrecked with injuries they couldn't overcome, or that they were starting to sputter out.
I quite liked the Rams call aswell, if Stafford retires, that could be a great fit. You can't say shanny is a bad coach, but of him or McVay, I think McVay might take the edge.
reply
Prior to this season I would have taken Shanahan over McVay even though McVay has a Super Bowl but I was disappointed with Shanahan this year. Seemed to blame injuries too much and it was obvious their DC and ST coordinator weren't good enough, yet he let them stay the whole season and just get worse and worse as the league figured out their weaknesses. Also he stuck with some vets that weren't playing well instead of playing young guys that were showing a lot of promise.
On the other hand. I think McVay did an amazing job weathering the storm early in the year when they were also terribly injured and finding ways to win games they had no business winning throughout the year.
I think Shanahan is still a good coach but he needs a big bounce back year. Right now I would have McVay ahead of him in the rankings.
reply
Yeah, I had the Rams in my mind as a floating through the season team. But that was just because they got so beat up so early. Once they regained health and form, they reminded a lot of people, myself included that they're firmly in the "contender" catagory.
You think maybe 9ers go after Rob Salah for DC?
reply
I heard it was pretty much a lock unless he got one of the HC jobs he was interviewing for. I think he might get one though. Lots of teams need coaches. We will see.
reply
I thought he was looking at a job in GB. Personally I wouldn't want him in division šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ dudes a great defensive mind.
reply
He joined them as an advisor but I don't think they are getting rid of their DC so there will definitely be better opportunities for him.

Lol haha he's doing what Dak did to the boyz...

It amazes me that weather is such a consideration. Iā€™m not disagreeing, itā€™s just wild that someone youā€™re talking about getting $60M canā€™t play in bad weather
reply
It shouldnā€™t be, most QBs play worse in poor weather, but Purdy has been exceptionally bad in snow and significant rain so I think it has to be a consideration.
reply
If the evidence supports it, and I trust your fact checking on the subject.
Maybe he should train in Seattle in the offseason to get better with the rain
reply
Should do something.
reply
I'm not sure what will happen to him, but I know this: the kid deserves what's coming to him. Played his butt off and will find the place somewhere. Anywhere he goes, he will make the team better. 60 mil? Not sure, I don't think he will go for #1 salary either, he says the right things and I hope he will find his place.
reply
I canā€™t believe people are actually justifying paying Brock Purdy $60M a year šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
reply
Did Dak deserve 60M. Love, Herbert, Hurts, Lawrence all make over 50M. Love and Herbert have done nothing but shit the bed in the playoffs and Hurts is a running back playing quarter back. Lawrence had one good year and has been disastrous otherwise. Sure they all have higher ceilings than Brock.
I donā€™t think he should be getting 60M either. I make the argument there are only a few really good situations for him. But the market is the market.
Wait until it is time for Mahomes and Allen to get their next extensions. They are going to be 80M apy.
reply
Possibly but no one would blink an eye if itā€™s the best QBs in the game getting that level of pay.
This whole ā€œthe market is the marketā€ idea is ridiculous.
As a fan who lived in QB hell for 20 seasons I saw QBs get the ā€œmarket rateā€ and did absolutely nothing to improve the football team.
Niners have been good despite the QB. I think management missed on Trey Lance and now they are trying to justify overpaying a slightly above average QB in Purdy because thatā€™s what the ā€œmarket rateā€ is. You watch way more games than I do of Purdy but the times I have watched him nothing jumps off the screen with this guy. Heā€™s not fast. His arm is okay. He makes good reads and gets the ball out but a soon as the running game dies the niners offense becomes nothing. I never seen Purdy over come that. Put the team on his back with 30 or 40+ attempts for massive amount of yards and TDs. That makes me think here we go again another QB about to get a massive deal locking up cap to not fill out the team around them then boom you start to suck and end up in no manā€™s land of QB play kind of like what the giants are dealing with now. They shouldā€™ve paid Saquon and not Daniel Jones.
This is just my thoughts. Purdy should be aware of his limitations and leave some money on the table to fill out the team around him. But if getting paid is more important than winning then I predict this will end badly for the niners.
reply
I think your perspective is fair. Purdy is at his best when the offense is balanced. His best games are when he is throwing 25 times and highly efficient, not when he has to throw 35 or 40 times. But 49ers are also not built that way. Itā€™s hard to say if he would be successful or not if they were a more passing game focused offense with a better OLine and more explosive WRs. They have good receivers that destroy zone defenses but they donā€™t have burners that are vertical threats.
In my eyes there are only 4 elite QBs in the league and then a few young guys like Stroud, Love, Daniels, Williams that have potential to become elite but it remains to be seen.
32 teams need a quarterback though so what are the other 24 teams supposed to do. They canā€™t all tank to try to get the next potential elite guy.
Rams won a Super Bowl with Stafford. He is really good and a veteran but not elite. Philly almost won with Hurts. 49ers almost won with Purdy. Lions might win this year with Goff. It says something that these teams are coming close without top 4 QBs but instead guys that fit their system really well.
I guess my point is there is so few elite guys that you have to decide if you want the search for perfect to be the enemy of good.
(Also I would say you are mistaken about Purdy not being fast. He isnā€™t a major running threat but he is quick and can use his legs well to escape trouble. I would say he is in the top half of the league in QB running ability but not amongst the top guys)
reply
I looked into the rushing stats. Purdy was 11th in NFL this season for QB rushing yards. He had more rushing yards than Mahomes and had more rushing TDs than Jackson. He had the same amount of rushing TDs as Murray. So he doesnā€™t have elite speed but can make things happen with his legs.
reply
Who are top 4 elite QB in your mind? Mahomes, Allen, and who else?
reply
Mahomes, Allen, Jackson and Burrow. I put Burrow back in after this season. Prior to this year I would have said 3.
reply
That was my list, too.
AFC is stacked
reply
I'm with you @grayruby
reply
Let's just hope the contract details are favourable even if the APY isn't.
reply
Yeah, you can mess with the details and add void years to spread the cap.
reply
Definitely. 49ers love playing those games and the cap is going to keep going up. They probably move to an 18 game season at some point which will mean more TV money and the cap will go up even more.
I think when Mahomes or Allen are due for a new extension they will get 80M a year.
reply
That kinda money to me is insane. But then I don't really follow baseball... Now those contracts are crazy.
