Before hardware wallets and seed phrases and hd wallets the only way to preserve “access to bitcoins” was to store individual private keys in text files on computers and/or back them up on hard drives.

It didn't say how he did it but my guess would be he put his Bitcoin into a paper wallet and then transferred that to a thumb drive
