not true, @jasonb you don't need to KYC to buy domain, you just need to provide certain info, but does not need to be your personal information. For example NameCheap and others offer the option to buy rent domain names with bitcoin, you just create an account using an anonymous email and register the domain you want.
Think about top-level domain (TLD) names like home addresses, is not and never will be yours (or maybe I'm just unaware of the buy forever option). Here the list of all available TLD https://tld-list.com/tlds-from-a-z
You'll see, the .nostr TLD is not there (it will be super cool though) that's because, as @megaptera mentioned providers are centralized and slaves of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)

Nice! Super glad I didn't pull the trigger yet!

I'm learning some pretty disturbing stuff today. I'm surprised bitcoiners don't discuss this more. ...or maybe I'm not paying enough attention.

It is discussed believe me, ICANN will be obsolete really soon, like many other centralized bs.
I like the fact you highlighted, a domain can not be bought... only rented! So true!
I probably does not apply to .onion domains... not sure how it all works yet

NameCheap BTC address: bc1q06dut7rut6w9my38wmjk8kqcjydngja84sz4pp with payjoin: bitcoin:bc1q06dut7rut6w9my38wmjk8kqcjydngja84sz4pp?amount=0.0063982&pj=https://btcpay.namecheap.com/BTC/pj

Holy moly! That would be a lot of sats to gift lil' ol' jasonb for making silly bitcoin games! Thanks for showing it's possible though!! I'm totally doing this (with a way cheaper domain name) ASAP.

I got canceled after paying. This is no real proof.
