I’m feeling quite proud of myself because this year, I remembered to take this book to class to impart the finer points of the magic ‘e’ in my charges. I even found a YouTube video that showed all the pages of this book, even if it was titled differently as “Market Day for Mrs Wordy”.
Inge Plater wrote a simple story about Mrs Wordy selling ‘E’s at the market place. She attracted the attention of Mr Puzzle who bought lots of ‘E’s from her. Young minds might be excited at how the addition of an ‘E’ transforms one item into another. Examples include cap -> cape, kit -> kite, and tub -> tube.
So, I now possess hands-on experience in getting students to recite the key principle: the magic ‘e’ makes the vowel say its own name. I foresee having to do this for my children in the future, so it’s nice when work dovetails with life.
