I'm considering going part-time at my job so I can focus on helping to build Bitcoin and expand its reach, but I don't know what area would be best to work in. Onboarding new users and businesses? Writing code for nostr and similar apps? Is there a site or service which doesn't exist but you wish did? Looking for something I can do on a consulting/independent basis as opposed to a waged job.
What niches remain to be filled? I have an IT background, programming/sysadmin skills, good at communicating complex technical ideas to laypeople, etc.
Any ideas?

Bro is literally wading through sludge trying to get shit done and all he gets is criticism
Look at this note he relayed earlier...
I'm sure he's looking for eager devs to do the work

The cashu stuff is definitely something I want to read up more on and get a better understanding of. He's developing a lot of kick-ass stuff.

Onboarding businesses. We need more merchants.

This is what I was initially wanting to do, but getting the money side of it to work out is complicated. Not many businesses want to pay somebody to do this, even if they otherwise wanted to accept Bitcoin. And what they would be willing to pay, even if I was working 8 hours a day, won't make rent happen. At least if we're talking about small to medium sized businesses and merchants. I could be completely wrong about that of course, but that's my read on it. And unlike, for example, coding a new killer app, there's no chance that I am working for cheap now in the hopes of it making bigger money down the line.
Larger businesses might pay more, but then you're getting into long-term support contracts, complying with various standards, integrating with their ERP system, and getting a lot more complicated than "here's BTCPay server configured with what you need" or something along those lines.

If there is no chance to go directly to the end bussines, maybe try to join a company that try to do that, I think, as an example, the @OPAGO_PAY guys, they are here and are active in this regards.
As a solo dev... there is no easy path in my view.

I'm using Alby Desktop, which is a self-custodial lightning node for desktop computers. I really like it, but they don't have a mobile version afaik. I think a mobile version of something like it would be really great. I tried Breez before, which was also a self-custodial mobile lightning wallet but it was a bit buggy for me.
I also think something has to be done about routing ease-of-use in lightning. Routing failures appear quite common unless you're willing to pay high routing fees. Problem is, it's not obvious at all what the "correct" fee rate is in order to make a lightning transaction.

You ever tried zeus? Never had a routing issue w it, use it daily, default settings.

We have so many apps optimized for people who are brain dead to install, point and click work and go. Over time, they go away due to reliance on its developer or regulatory concerns, or what have you.
What's missing, are apps that are simple to use, with reasonable defaults, that give power to the user and help them get better at using Bitcoin in a sovereign way over time.
Maybe contribute to padawan wallet for a while? https://github.com/thunderbiscuit/padawan-wallet/issues/325

Interesting I'd never heard of this wallet concept before, definitely something that is useful for onboarding new people
