It's a good question.
For me, what's different from the old days is that being on social media is like dipping your brain in bleach, with cayenne pepper mixed in. You take damage from it, at least I do, and eventually you just have to ghost for a while.
Still trying to figure out how to inhabit the scene the right way, where it's accretive to my life, and to build relationships that feel real and honest. I think this is a civilization-level problem.
I'd love for you to elaborate on all of that in a post. I'm very curious about what drove you away, what drew you back, and how you're thinking about moving forward. Also, what you've noticed after returning.

i stay off most social media, have a look at nostr every now and then, and facebook i keep around as there are some useful expat groups for me, but i also see plenty of triggering stuff so i limit my time. SN has its own vibe and i don't find it has the same drain as other platforms

What's the cayenne pepper in this metaphor? Bleach=damage and cayenne pepper=?

More damage. Different kinds of irritation.
