I remember when I first noticed the same thing. It would be great to attract some of them back (occasionally they pop back in).
k00b likes to tell us that SN is still in beta, as a reminder that changes are coming. I think attrition tends to cluster around the big changes: two years ago that was territories, last year it was MSM, this year it'll be Cowboy Credits.

The people who are meant to stay will stay. I do miss some of the older posters, they had interesting perspectives. Just couldnt make the economics and time work, l guess.

That's exactly it. Life comes up and Stacker News won't always find a role in people's routines (hard as that may be for me to fathom).

I get it though. A lot of people wander here and stay for a moment. Wanting to make lots of sats from seeing a post that has 100k on it. It isnt as easy to replicate as people think.

I think there's also some burn out. There aren't that many different people here, so maybe someone just never finds a sufficient group that they click with.
I'm fascinated by the question of "What separates stackers from non-stackers?"

I think everyone burns out after a while. Its just a matter of when. I have noticed I talk to the same people, but there are the few that come along that are worth talking to here. The question could be asked, "What separates the holders from the non holders?" Just life experiences and situation?

I've noticed that I'm talking to a new set of people, now that ~HealthAndFitness is up.

There are always good topics, and the random column is nice when it feels like a slow day. I do talk to new people....but I always wonder what their objective is.
