I talked to a trucker one day. I asked him about the loneliness of the job. He said he wouldn't trade the satisfaction he gets from the job for anything else in the world. He said most truckers love their job. He said he knows many many other truckers and they will meet up at random gas stations nearby highways, chat up before sleeping overnight and hitting the road again. That was in Europe. Same for you?
EDIT: we should start an ~AMA series on fascinating but random day-to-day jobs~~
I used to be over the road and live in the truck. It was actually incredibly lonely for me. Now I work in LTL (Less than full load). I do probably 20 stops a day locally. I work 10 to 12 hous a day but I get to go home to my wife every night.
I would do an AMA, but I'm not sure how interesting being a trucker is, I was however, the 2006 time magazine person of the year, so maybe that would be worth doing an AMA about.
