OK. Do the wallets have to be connected 24/7 to make and receive zaps of sats? Or can it be connected intermittently? Or would a 24/7 Raspberry Pi be a better situation? Do you have some recommendations?

That's not the right question you should ask. Ask yourself: why are you on SN? To earn some sats or to say something and hang around, shitposting?
If you came with the idea of "post to earn"... forget it, is not worth it. And I can write a full blown post why (anyways I wrote several here in the past). For "post to earn" yes you will need a good node and good posts, and be on SN more than 1-2h/day.
If you came just to hang around have fun and discussions stuff with others, learn from each others, post meme and shit, then CCs are just fine. Do not complicate it more than is need it. This is "pay to post".
