Amtrak said Tuesday that crews havecompleted a significant milestone for the almost $3 billion Susquehanna River Bridge project along the Maryland portion of the rail company’s 450-mile Northeastern Corridor (NEC) from Washington, D.C. to Boston.
Crews will replace the two-track, moveable Susquehanna River Bridge, which connects the Maryland cities of Havre de Grace and Perryville, with two new two-track fixed bridges, the rail company said. The project also includes overhead power, signal, safety and security system modernization.
Late last year, Amtrak announced that the Flatiron/Herzog Joint Venture would serve as construction manager at risk for the project. Fay, S&B Construction won the contract for demolition of and removal of remnant piers to the east of the existing bridge, and an AECOM-led team will work under a project and construction management contract.
Fay, Amtrak said, has nowremoved the last of the 10 leftover piers that were used to support a long-demolished 1860s-era rail bridge.
Very cool looking bridge!
