I get the sentiment, however, sometimes bringing a link to my attention is enough for me to throw sats around (because I'm not a degen who's on all these websites where'd I'd be able to find them on my own). Usually, websites have google analytics integrated in them, and the site owner can see where their web traffic is coming from. If a link is shared on SN, the site sees that people visited their site from a link shared on SN
Given that SN is a site where people have Bitcoin, the site owner might decide to then add a "tip the author with sats" option on their own website.
That all being said, I'll probably stop tipping for links to legacy media websites.

Let's remember that SN is bitcoin-centric now, but as @k00b said he would like to extend it to more areas:
Right now, much of the conversation on Stacker News revolves around Bitcoin and related topics, but over time there will be new topics that are covered on different subs.
So offer sats to not-bitcoin-related authors seem a nice way to promote SN and the Bitcoin ecosystem in a single step.
