A Jasprit Bumrah-less Indian team failed to restrict Australia on Day 3 of the final Test match in Sydney. India lost the 5th Test by 6 wickets, surrendering the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in 10 years.
The bigger concern heading into today's play for India was about Bumrah's injury. Irrespective of the runs, they needed the skipper with the ball but unfortunately, it wasn't to be. Australia wasted very little time to close the Indian innings and despite removing three wickets inside lunch, the visitors were always made to look behind the game due to the absence of their premier fast bowler. Travis Head and Beau Webster played with great control and didn't really look to slog towards the end. That's a crystal clear sign that the Aussies were here to prove a point and not throw it away in the name of 'intent'. Who expected SCG to produce the most spiciest wicket of the series? And for a Test match to get over in 2 and half days in Sydney? You have seen it all this series, haven't you?
This is a surrender not a loss.
India's decade long domination of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy came to a grinding halt as Australia hammered the Jasprit Bumrah side by 6 wickets on Sunday, January 5. Playing in Day 3 of the final Test match in Sydney, India simply failed to contain the Australian batting line-up as the hosts chased down a target of 162 runs in just 27 overs.
The highly anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy Series has been won by Australia convincingly, defeating India 3-1 in the 5 match series, with the rain saving India in the drawn match at Brisbane.
Though India started the series on a positive note with a win by 295 runs at Perth in the first Test, Australia didn’t let India get another chance in the series.
In the next Test, Australia won by 10 Wickets at Adelaide in the Day-Night Test. India escaped with a draw in the next Test at Brisbane thanks to the rain which severely affected the game.
In the 4th Test in the historic Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia won by 184 runs. In the final Test at Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia won by 6 Wickets.
This is the first time since India’s tour of Australia in 2014-15 that Australia have managed to win the trophy. In between, India won 2 series in Australia and also 2 at home, but this time, Australia got the better of them.
