I will say that when someone above the age of 70 breaks a hip they typically do not live more than 18 months. Broken hips went from less than a year death sentence to something I would say is roughly 2ish year death sentence. 

We are making huge progress to get rid of this entirely but it seems that their bodies are just not able to handle that amount of anesthesia and that amount of invasive surgery

Yeah brutal week for that family. Especially since it was a post surgery complications thing. He fell and broke his hip. You don't expect that to be fatal even for an older person.
