Mark 16:17-18 "And they that believe, these signs shall follow them; they shall cast out demons in my name, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall lift up serpents, and they shall drink no deadly thing, and it shall by no means hurt them; they shall be afflicted." shall lay hands on them, and they shall be healed."
Scripture clearly teaches that it is His will for Christ's followers to perform miracles as they proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God (Matthew 10:1: Mark 3:14-15; Luke 9:2 , 10:17 and John 14).
(1) Such sign work done by the disciples proves that the gospel teaching is authentic, and that the kingdom of God has come into the world with power (John 10:25: Acts 10:38).
(2) Every sign of this (except the poisoning) is recorded as occurring in the history of the early church: (a) speaking in new tongues (Acts 2:4; 10:46; 19:6; 1 Cor. 12:30; 14.); (b) casting out evil spirits (Acts 5:15-16: 16:18; 19:11-12) and (c) being saved from death by snake bites (Acts 28:3-5) and (d) healing the sick (Acts 3:17; 8:7; 9:33-34: 14:8-10: 28:7-8).
(3) These spiritual signs will continue in the Christian church until the return of Jesus. Nowhere in Scripture does it say that these will never happen again after Jesus' ascension (1 Cor 1:7 and 12:28: Gal 3:5).
(4) It is very clear that the preaching of the good news about the kingdom of God and bringing people to the experience of salvation was not the only task of the followers of Christ; They also had the responsibility, like Christ, to cast out evil spirits and heal the sick, and to bring His kingdom to the world (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:47 and Acts 10:38 ).
(5) In Mark 16:15-20 Jesus wants to say that these signs are not just special gifts for some people; But it will be given to all believers, if they obey Christ and testify to the gospel and claim the promises.
(6) The failure of these signs to occur in the church today lies not in the failure of Christ's promises to be fulfilled, but in the failure of Jesus' followers (see Matthew 17:17).
(7) Christ promised that when we go to war against Satan's kingdom, His authority and presence will go with us (Matthew 28:28-20; Luke 24:47-49). We are to free people from their captivity by preaching the gospel, living godly lives (Matthew 6:33; Romans 6:13; 14:17), and performing signs and wonders through the power of the Holy Spirit .
