I'm pretty decent at hiding my feelings about this kind of thing. Maybe that's not so great though - maybe I should push a little harder to make the gift giving thing just a LITTLE bit more reasonable.

Maybe, but I just let this stuff go because I don't see where I can make a net positive impact with an objection.
You probably have to lay the groundwork throughout the year, by talking about how you don't like wasteful/harmful gifts. There's no guarantee anyone will listen to you though.
