Firstly, shout out to @StillStackinAfterAllTheseYears for beating me to the punch to a degree and talking about NFL/Netflix Christmas Day games. #824796
After the Lakers vs Warriors NBA game yesterday, Lebron James said "I love the NFL. But Christmas is our day".
I am not sure Christmas should be assigned to belonging to any sports league but I do think the scheduling war for Christmas Day eyeballs is just heating up. I would not be shocked if NFL adds a third game or if the NHL tries to jump into the foray with a Christmas day outdoor game.
Christmas day scheduling is much easier for the NBA but the NFL seems to have figured it out. I don't know how they will deal with scheduling Christmas Day games on a Tuesday, but they don't have to worry about that until 2029.
At first glance the NFL games looked like pretty good matchups yesterday but they ended up sucking, as many Thursday Night Football matchups do. Short rest and travel during the holiday season probably isn't the best recipe for peak performance and competition. Considering how important late season games are, I would guess the players and teams would prefer not to play on Christmas but I doubt that will deter the league or its broadcast partners. I expect at some point the NFL will go to an 18 game schedule and when they do it would make sense to add a second bye week. This could help solve scheduling issues in the future as you can just give all the teams scheduled on Christmas day their second bye week the week prior.
The NBA games on the other hand were quite good. Besides the Nuggets vs Suns late game, all the games were close. NBA seems to have perfected their game scheduling, managing to fit 5 games in on the day. But even if the NBA Christmas day product is better does it really matter up against the NFL juggernaut?
What do you think Stackers? Can the NBA retain the Christmas Day sporting mindshare or will the NFL steamroll them even if the games aren't as high quality?
Sats for all,
