I do not think it is any surprise that an investigation opened up into one of the remaining Chinese-owned and manufactured telecom companies that operate in the US. After the Salt Typhoon hacks were made public this year you knew the US was going to look into how the hacks got so deep and finding that a Chinese company produces some of the most popular internet routers was an easy starting point. It is almost as if the company saw this coming as well since earlier this year they moved to distance themselves from their China operations. TP-Link Systems announced a corporate restructuring and established a headquarters in California which is well... interesting timing.
Given how deep the hack was able to get as the hackers were able to listen into peoples calls and read their texts it is a huge huge issue. An effect of this has already been seen as President Trump has been holding so many in-person meetings because he does not trust the telecom companies and what could be compromised since the US is still figuring that out.
