I’m from Singapore, an East Asian country, and we have been known to do well in these PISA tests. For instance, we topped the world in the inaugural creative thinking poll. Our Maths question used in the Primary School Leaving Examination (aimed at 12-year-olds) has been featured by the founder of the ~Science territory.
In case you don’t know what PISA is, here is an explanation:
Created by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), PISA tests the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students in mathematics, reading and science. Eighty-one countries and economies took part in the 2022 assessment, which focused on mathematics, and the data were released by the OECD on 5 December 2023. Source
I should stop flexing about my education system. Due to the complexity and ambiguity of the VUCA world (which is evolving into a BANI one), nations are invested in developing their youths to meet the requirements of a knowledge economy. The OECD hence implemented the PISA test to determine which countries were doing a better job in inculcating in their young the knowledge and skills necessary for high value creation jobs.
Do you place much stock in the way the PISA test is carried out? Do you think the results are an accurate reflection of the academic prowess of your country’s youths?
