Those marks prevented the shaving of the coin’s edge to debase the coins by taking weight off of them. Another way to f*ck other people. You could also put the coins in a bag, shake it vigorously to make them take little flakes off the coins to fall in the bag. Then collect and remelt the flakes to make more coins. Guess who mostly did this.
