A man, Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with murder in connection with the killing of Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pa., after a tip from a McDonald's employee who recognized him from surveillance photos released by the police. The suspect was found with a ghost gun, a suppressor, and false identification cards, as well as a 262-word handwritten manifesto that appears to take responsibility for the murder and criticizes the health care industry's "alleged corruption and 'power games'." Mangione was born and raised in Maryland and had recently lived in Honolulu. He had a successful academic and professional background, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering, and working as a head counselor at Stanford University's Pre-Collegiate Studies program. However, he stopped communicating with friends and family six months ago, citing a serious back injury. The shooting occurred on Wednesday morning as Thompson arrived at a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan to prepare for a UnitedHealthcare investors' day gathering. The killer, wearing a dark hooded jacket and a mask, approached Thompson from behind and fired several rounds, striking him at least once in the back and once in the right calf. The suspect has been denied bail and is facing extradition to New York, which could take weeks.
