It's possible that whether or not we kill ourselves is the experiment. 

because i feel like they would know will still have a ton more mental evolution before we even get remotely close to not potentially destroying each other. it would be like cutting short the experiment

What if destroying ourselves is part of the great filter?  Would they step in, or would they wait to see if we were a species worthy of existing?
