I think the custodial wallet takes priority over connected wallets, as long as your custodial balance has enough to pay for the action you’re performing

That’s what he meant with custodial sats take priority. When you withdraw them, you’ll start zapping from your wallet.

Gotcha. Yeah, that has worked for me. What happens when you try to reply or leave a comment for 1 sat but your non-custodial wallet fails to find a route due to fees? I'm assuming your comment will fail to post?
