I want to empathize with the union boss with a tattoo sleeve and a different chunky gold chain for each day of the week, but I struggle to. Couldn't the union negotiate for retraining instead of stopping automation?

The fact that they can hold the US economy hostage to keep automation out of our docks is fucking criminal.
The largest economy in the world does not have a port ranked among the 10 best, it is surprising, especially with the enormous coastline it has.
I know the situation for workers is difficult, but this has always happened in all areas. The new technology supersedes the previous one
The workers are overpaid
It’s not a difficult situation
I considered losing their job as a difficult situation. But what can they do? This happened in the automotive, agricultural and other industrial areas.
No one is losing their job because they are union and labor supply is deliberately suppressed
Currently suppressed, but in the not too distant future, what will happen?
Well if a company only has $100 to pay the workers, they can have 10@$10 or 20@$5 or 2@$50. It is then up to the union members to decide how many of themselves to throw out of any kind of work at all.
Why should they do anything that benefits other people? They cannot even do things that benefit all the members of the union. Higher wages and no automation will mean less jobs available in the future. Then the longshoremen can wait for the totally automated, Chinese installed port in a new location where they have no statist protections.
They want what they want and don’t give a damn in how they get (and probably lose) it.
The opposition to automation is laughable
It will not get them anywhere in the long run. The Luddites always seem to lose the plot when time goes marching on, They could just as well oppose robots, but they are coming or are here now,
They think the anti automation argument will help them win the court of public opinion but also a miscalculation
That is a huge miscalculation! The populace will get fed up with the games that the unions are playing with the products that we want. They may just come in for their very own “BudLite” moment.
I love StosselTV! Watch most of his stuff since 2016
Me too
Longshoremen are overpaid. They make over $300k for heavy lifting with machinery
They also have a history of corruption and violence consistent with other labor unions
Yes, but they are protected by the state because they are the proletariat that will be ruling us all under the newest form of government. These people have been and always be corrupt. That is their speciality.
"if we don't stop progress, how will anyone ever have jobs!?" lol brilliant
