Just bought 30 lbs of pure beeswax. The plan is to turn it into a few dozen hand-dipped dinner candles.
Surprisingly, the beeswax gives off a really nice (but subtle) scent in its raw form.
Will report back with photos of the finished products, let me know if you'd like to see photos of the production process too.

gorgeous raw material. Did you make friends with a farmer? I would be curious if you find other uses for it as well

Thanks, just met the beekeeper today for the first time - I can't quite put my finger on why, but it seems like a really fun business to be in. And I'm not even particularly fond of bees.

I keep bees. My girls have been having a tough time of it for the last few years. We get honey, wax, royal jelly, propolis, sometimes stings and a lot of interesting times. Since we are in an urban setting they seem to be pretty productive. I am always complaining about the tendency for people to only monocrop in their yards — only bluegrass. And, I don’t like spraying of any kind, whether in the sky or to the lawns.

Very cool, what got you into beekeeping?
Would you need to find ways to give them more crops to pollinate if your neighbors are all monocrop grass yards?

Nice, and yes, more photos. Maybe it is also mosquito repellent? Let us know
(I have used raw propolis in the past for medicinal purposes.)
reply
Oh nice, I had heard the word propolis mentioned a few times online, but hadn't ever heard of anyone using it before

It's a good source of vitamins, minerals, etc, with strong anti bacterial, and antiviral properties. Good for the immune system!

interesting

Really good for the immune system. The bees use it to seal the hive. It gets all over and is better than epoxy to hold stuff together. They also use it if they don’t like the spacing of the frames in the hive to either make the space nonexistent or correct the spacing to what they like (5/16ths of an inch (between 2 and 3mm).

Very cool.
Yes I want to see the production process.

Great, I'll put together an album of photos. I'm waiting on a shipment of square braid cotton that I can use for wicks, hopefully I can do the first run of candles on Sunday

I've heard it makes for good lotion too for healing cracked hands? Also, curious, were you able to purchase the beeswax with bitcoin?
reply
It turns out there are quite a few use cases for it - you can even use it to add a finish to wood or leather products. Paid with boomer bucks.
