It is pretty wild looking at the last 5-6 years and how TikTok's enemies have rapidly changed. When Trump first tried to ban it Democrats were furious now Democrats are at the forefront of banning the very app they worked to save. While the legislation was bipartisan and really did soar quickly through Congress incoming President Trump has reversed his stance and said it shouldn't be banned.
The law takes effect Jan. 19th so Trump cant stop it from going into effect and even when he takes office, he does not have a solid way of reversing what has already been done. TikTok's only hope hinges on them appealing to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court not only agreeing to hear it but freezing the law so that it does not take effect.
TikTok is going to be a huge bargaining chip for Trump to have over China. Since China issued export restrictions in August 2020 to prevent the sale the first time around giving them the ability to block the sale, something they have said they would do, they could be shut out of one of their most important markets without any compensation. American buyers have emerged and groups have worked to come together to raise the $200 billion it is estimated to cost but China has been so against the sale that creating those groups and getting commitments is hard.
