We made it through the Group Play stage of the NBA Emirates Cup. Now the contest really heats up. It's single elimination from here on out, for us and for the teams.

The Quarter Finals will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday. Should you survive that, the Semi Finals will be on Saturday, 12/14, with the Finals being Tuesday, 12/ 17.

The bracket is divided by East and West, so the winners from the QF will matchup by division in the SF.

  • Warriors @ Rockets

I'm pretty strongly leaning towards the Knicks, but I need to work out through the possible scenarios a bit more.

An interesting thing about this table is that the three stackers who still have six remaining teams are the three survivors who had to use their rebuys.

I haven't done an official tally for a bit, but we're somewhere around that.

Knicks

Might as well go same as you.

If I’m projecting the Bucks to make the Finals (which I am) then I might as well pick the team I expect to lose to them in the semi-finals.

But are the Bucks even good? Do they deserve that 1-seed? Are they playing harder because of the NBA cup?

reply

Seems like sound reasoning to me.

reply

Ppl zap my logic. I like it! Didn’t even need to make it a post! Thanks for the support!

reply

You got lucky with my YOLO mode zapping.

reply

DID YOLO TURBO ZAP MODE TURN ON 69-420??

That will be my first pull request!

I think this means u zapped twice in a row on turbo tho

reply

It means exactly that.

I was using my phone and the first zap created such a pale shade of green that I didn't realize I had already zapped it.

reply

I’m grateful

This post spelled Wariors with a typo and it bothers me that it's too late to edit it.

reply

That bothers me too. I wish you hadn't pointed it out.

It's 2-on-1 now, @gnilma.

Death matches are always fun. Warriors played really well last night against the TWolves. All hope is not lost even though the odds are against me.

reply

You also took the Rockets?

I told him that is a bit of a risky pick but if he wins he will likely be laughing with Bucks, Knicks and Thunder all in play.

reply

No, I don't have the Rockets left. @Carresan's the other Rocket picker.

reply

Gotcha. Who did you pick?

Warriors

Interesting. Noted.

After pondering on it for a bit, that seems like a pretty bad pick. But my options are limited. I either pick to stay alive, which will probably result in me running out of picks; or go with a risky path that could still lead me to the finals. That involves picking the Warriors this round, which is the underdog of the match. I checked the injury report AFTER making the pick and realized both Curry and Green are out for tonight's preview game versus the Rockets. I pray to the basketball gods that Curry and Green come back well rested and 200% ready to go next Tuesday. In summary, I'm taking the risky path to still try to win this thing.

reply

That makes sense. You have to project into a future where you won and then back out what path got you there.

Since we're up against people with more options than us, just surviving to the next round has a low win probability.

Isn't it in my interest to pick between the Hawks @ Knicks since only one of them will advance anyways? Or is it like, no, I shouldn't pick either the Hawks nor the Knicks if I think they might make the title game?

Like I have to decide now who I think is going to the title game so I don't pick them yet?

reply

I told you the strategery would ramp up.

I would be thinking about who's still going to be around later. With the Knicks and Hawks, you know one of them will be there in the next round.

If you pick one of them now, here are the two possibilities:

  1. You pick wrong and get eliminated
  2. You pick right and now have no one to pick from that matchup.
reply

oh god i don't want to set myself up for failure!! AHHH!! The strategery is real!!

reply

Still undecided, will wait a bit longer

Rockets

reply

We have our first death match!

reply

hahaha, I know it's going to be fun. The only problem is that it's going to be quite late here to watch it. So hard to take a decision!

reply

So for the three survivors that had to use re-buys, that would've been their goal then right? To burn a pick that didn't make the playoffs?

If the Warriors/Magic/Mavs win the cup does this mean I lose?

reply

Yes. They basically paid 5k to have more options now.

reply

I am pretty sure I know who I am going to pick but I want to give it a few days, see if there are any injuries and have results from another game or two each to see how teams are playing going into Tuesday.

@remindme in 3 days

reply

After much deliberation, I'm taking the Knicks.

I want to leave OKC for the end and I expect Milwaukee to beat the Knicks if they meet in the SF's.
